Advertising laws will apply to the internet from March 1st 2011

Did you know that you can say pretty much anything you like in an advert on the internet? With no redress whatsoever. You can lie, cheat, be completely offensive, and you can get away with it.

Until March the 1st 2011.

It's a little known fact that the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has absolutely no juristiction on the internet.

It turns out that the Advertising Standards Authority isn't actually the "authority for advertising standards" as the name would suggest. It's just the authority for advertising standards covering media that had already been invented when the legislation was written.

This means that as long as you are using a newer technology than was around when the legislators were writing their laws, you can abuse your competitors, lie to your potential customers and do anything else which is generally considered illegal using television or print media.

The ASA has recently announced that you have until the 1st of March to get all of your abuse and immoral advertising out of the way because their jurisdiction will then expand to include websites.

I bet if you'd known this a few years ago, you'd have been a lot more ruthless and probably would've bought into this whole internet thing a lot earlier :-)

For years I've been making sure that all of my online advertising was "legal, decent, honest and truthful" and I couldn't understand why so many others were getting away with so much.

Isn't it typical that you find these things out when it's too late :-)
